There is a question that, once it gets hold of you, never quite lets go. Not "what is in the world?" — that is the business of science, and it does it superbly. The deeper question is the one underneath: what is the world, that anything is in it at all? Is reality what it seems? And if it is not — if the solid, coloured, humming world in front of you right now is in some sense a construction, a translation, a best guess — then what, exactly, is being constructed, and out of what?
