There is a particular kind of silence that comes just before a sound. Tap a wine glass and watch the surface of the liquid inside. Stand near a cathedral organ when the lowest pipe opens and feel your sternum move without your permission. Put your hand on a speaker. Hum, with your mouth closed, and notice the way your whole skull seems to fill. Sound is not a thing that happens to you from the outside.
