Everyone tells you to trust your intuition. Almost no one tells you how.

What Intuition Actually Is

It's consistent under reflection. Sleep on it. If the feeling is still there in the morning, after a walk, after you've eaten — that's signal. If it evaporates once you're less tired or less hungry, it was noise.
It shows up in the body. A knot in the stomach, a lightness in the chest, a sudden stillness. The body keeps score. Learn your own somatic vocabulary.
Signs You're Hearing Fear or Bias
Fear disguises itself as intuition constantly. Here's how to catch it:
It comes with an excuse already attached. Real intuition is just a signal. Fear arrives pre-packaged with a story about why you shouldn't do the thing.
It maps to a pattern from your past. If your last business partner burned you and now every new partner 'feels wrong,' that's trauma talking, not wisdom. Acknowledge it, then separate it.
It aligns suspiciously with what's comfortable. If your gut always happens to agree with the option that requires less risk, less effort, or less vulnerability — interrogate that.
It changes based on who's in the room. Intuition doesn't shift because someone persuasive pushed back. If yours evaporates under social pressure, you were probably reading the social temperature, not the decision.
A Practical Process for Trusting Your Gut
You don't have to choose between pure logic and pure feeling. The goal is integration.
1. Create stillness before big decisions. Intuition is a quiet signal in a noisy environment. Meditation, long walks, time in nature — not because they're spiritual, but because they lower the ambient noise floor. You can't hear a whisper in a crowded room.
2. Journal the feeling before analyzing it. Write what you feel before you write what you think. Give the intuition a chance to speak before the rational mind talks it out of the room. One paragraph, unfiltered, about what your gut is saying.
3. Ask: where does this feeling come from? Trace it. Is it based on something you've observed directly? Is it pattern recognition from relevant experience? Or is it fear, an old wound, or a mental shortcut being applied lazily? You're not invalidating the feeling — you're auditing its source.
4. Test it in low-stakes situations first. Building trust with your intuition is like building trust with a person — it accumulates through small experiments. Notice when you override your gut and what happens. Track it. Over time you build a personal dataset.
5. Distinguish between the decision and the timing. Sometimes the intuition is right but the context is wrong. 'This doesn't feel right' might mean 'not now' rather than 'not ever.' Ask which one it is.
The Role of Domain and Experience
Be honest about where you have experience and where you don't.
If you've built three companies, your gut about a business model deserves serious weight. If you've never invested in real estate, your 'feeling' about a property deal is mostly anxiety and projection. That doesn't mean ignore it — it means get more data before acting on it.
The most dangerous intuitions are confident ones in unfamiliar territory. Beginners often feel certain not because they know something, but because they don't yet know what they don't know. True expertise produces a more nuanced, probabilistic inner sense — not certainty, but calibrated confidence.
When to Override the Data
Sometimes the numbers say yes and your gut says no. What then?
Act on the gut, but do the work to understand why. Don't just override the data — interrogate the feeling until you find the variable you hadn't accounted for. Often, the intuition is pointing at something real that the model missed.
Conversely, if all your research says yes and your gut says no and you can't find a legitimate reason after honest reflection — it's worth asking whether the 'gut feeling' is actually fear of success, imposter syndrome, or habitual self-sabotage. Those feel exactly like intuition. They're not.
Trust Is Built, Not Declared
You don't suddenly trust your intuition. You build that trust through the same mechanism you build any trust — repeated, honest observation over time.
Keep a decision journal. Note what your gut said, what you did, and what happened. Patterns emerge. You start to know which flavors of feeling are reliable guides and which ones are just weather.
The goal isn't blind trust in some mystical inner voice. It's developing a calibrated relationship with your own signal system — knowing when to listen closely, when to dig deeper, and when to override.
That kind of self-knowledge is worth more than any framework you'll read.
